Ireland started turning out for the team during pre-season this summer through good mate and current team player Blake Norton, and the ex- Irish player then asked additional ex-pros, who all compete in a midweek small-sided match, to participate.

"That running is what I'm looking for. It's good fun."

'Surreal Scenario

In addition to the forward's six scores on debut, Ireland has netted 8 in 3 games for Wythenshawe, while Boyd scored 5 on his first match and Lescott, a defender by position, notched a hat-trick in one match as a striker.

Wythenshawe are top of the Top Division with three victories from three and a GD of +19.

Paul Barrow, 38, who plays on the flank for the opposition, faced ex- Wigan defender Figueroa on the weekend - and had to tell his young son who Emile Heskey was.

He has played at 2 global tournaments for Honduras, in as well as featuring in more than two hundred Premier League games.

"It was going round like wildfire they had these former top-flight players," said Barrow.

"I think I was a little awestruck facing him to be honest.

"Also Heskey came on and he's has over 60 England appearances.

"We really have not ceased talking about it - I was calling my mum and brother on the way home.

"The opponents were all friendly, shaking our hands after the match - it was like facing a group of regular fellas.

"Now we can't wait for the return fixture."
