Historical Context
Forest vs Malmö and past encounters. The both teams have a historical link, also meeting in Forest's most recent continental tour in the 1995-96 Uefa Cup, but it is the European Cup final 46 years ago that links these clubs, with Britain's first £1m player Francis scoring the winner of a rather dull championship game to secure historic victory for the Forest supporters.
"Forest's famous bosses, grey-sweatered and anonymous amid all the festivities and cheers, stood for a moment on a bench serenely viewing the celebrations," noted the journalist. Theirs has been an outstanding achievement that it is unlikely to be replicated – from Second Division to European football in a short period."
Worth mentioning to consider Malmö, who became the pioneering and only Swedish club to advance to the ultimate game under manager Houghton.
Tonight's game is a very different to that peak, closer perhaps to the Uefa Cup first-round tie between Forest and Malmö in 1995-96. Forest are absolutely buzzing after defeating Liverpool convincingly at Liverpool's home on Saturday, while Malmö have been inactive since 9 November following the conclusion of their domestic campaign. The general expectation is on the home team tonight.
Plenty of other action on offer in this live coverage. The Scottish side have already been beaten by a Braga this season. Rangers are at the foot of the 36-team Europa League standings at the half-way stage of the initial phase with no points whatsoever. They badly want a victory if they are to have any chance of achieving a late surge for a knockout position.
Coverage will persist with all the evening matches and provide the latest scores from the earlier matches, including Villa vs Young Boys and Rotterdam vs Glasgow.
