Christantus Uche Sparks Straightforward Palace Victory at Shelbourne.
Despite entering their maiden continental adventure, Crystal Palace are adapting very quickly. Without star players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a commanding win that virtually secures them a place in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further three points in their next match against Finland's KuPS should be enough to seal direct entry to the knockout stages, particularly following a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Opportunity
This match offered a platform for some of Palace's fringe players to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second start since joining on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a well-taken goal. Forward Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, scoring for the second game in succession.
The Shelbourne side that had finished their domestic season proved outmatched against a mostly second-string Palace outfit. The Londoners were already depleted by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg injuries.
Dominance Asserted from the Outset
Despite heavy rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple finish.
Youngster Adam Wharton came close soon after, driving a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah then claimed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the official dismissed the appeals.
The formerArsenal man did not have wait long to get his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's shot had struck the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for a couple of agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Wraps Up the Contest
The match was as good as over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past some comically weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, coach Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to withdraw key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring his first touch, but saw his shot blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one shot strike off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also blazed a glaring chance, showing there is still room for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a late injury to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his first-team debut, rounding off an otherwise positive evening for the visiting side.
