Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The former head of state was convicted of plotting a armed takeover in the ninth month and handed more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he remained under confinement pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after recent developments emerged.

This included attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a document approving the arrest, Justice Moraes said data from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

Context of Sentencing

He was found guilty of orchestrating a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a scheme which included plans to kill the current president and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was prevented because it couldn't obtain the support of the military leaders. His successor was sworn in without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, many Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised government buildings in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The security forces took action and around 1,500 people were detained.

The justices found that the rioters had been provoked by him whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the moment, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The former president called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
